Osoršćica mountain hike, peak views and island history in one walk

Rising gently above northern Lošinj, the 10 km-long Osoršćica ridge offers the island’s highest point, Televrin at 588 m, and a slightly lower but very scenic St Mikula peak at 557 m. Crown Prince Rudolf of Habsburg was so taken with the panorama that he climbed it in 1887, helping launch the mountain’s reputation as the Adriatic’s first island hiking destination.

Routes and difficulty

  • Nerezine → St Mikula → Televrin
    • 11 km return, ▲ ≈ 650 m, 4–5 h out-and-back on a well-marked rocky carriageway
  • Osor trailhead for a shorter, steeper climb that emerges near the summit (parking by the Osor–Lošinj road)

Paths are signed with red-white hiking blazes or the blue “V/A” marks of the Via Apsyrtides long-distance trail. Good shoes and at least 1 L of water per person are recommended; there is no shade on the upper ridge.

What you’ll see

  • 360-degree views: Cres, Ilovik and the full Kvarner Bay spread out below the summit plateau. On very clear days the Velebit mountains appear on the horizon.
  • Stone-age and hermit caves: Vela Jama and the Cave of St Gaudentius sit just off the main track.
  • Wild herbs & Aleppo pines scent the trail; look for savory, sage and immortelle clinging to sunny rock faces.

Getting there

  • By car – 20 min from Mali Lošinj to Nerezine trailhead; free roadside parking.
  • By bus – Local lines stop in Nerezine and Osor, but schedules are limited outside high season.
  • By bike – A paved ascent from Mali Lošinj adds a 200 m climb before you even start the hike.

Practical tips

  • Start before 09:00 to reach the ridge before the midday sun.
  • Mobile signal is good along the crest, but sparse in gullies.
  • A small summit logbook sits in a metal box on Televrin – bring a pen to leave a note.

Why it’s worth it

In one half-day you can stand on the island’s roof, trace ancient trade routes far below, and breathe the same sea air that once impressed European royalty. For walkers keen to pair panoramic vistas with a touch of history, Osoršćica is Lošinj’s signature hike.
