For more than three decades the island’s signature summer happening has been Dolphin Day, a family-friendly festival created by the Blue World Institute to honor the bottlenose dolphins that live year-round in the surrounding waters. The thirty-third edition takes place on 1 July 2025 and turns the harbor of Veli Lošinj into an open-air classroom and playground devoted to marine conservation.
Location
Blue World Institute and waterfront, Veli Lošinj
What to Expect
- Morning treasure hunt: teams of children follow clues around the old town to learn dolphin facts and earn small eco-prizes.
- Hands-on workshops: researchers explain photo-identification, satellite tracking, and how to tell individual dolphins apart by fin markings.
- Creative corner: art students help kids paint a giant Dolphin Day banner that becomes the backdrop for the closing ceremony.
- Info stands and short talks: in several languages, covering safe boating guidelines, plastic-free tips, and how to “Adopt a Dolphin.”
- Evening quiz and raffle: families test their new knowledge, with prizes ranging from local honey to a sunset dolphin-watching cruise.
Why You Should Go
- Chances of seeing wild dolphins from shore or on a short boat trip are highest in early July.
- All activities are free, and proceeds from souvenir sales fund rescue and research projects.
- Children leave with certificates and stickers, while adults gain practical insight into protecting Adriatic wildlife.
How to Join
Simply arrive at the Blue World Institute courtyard by 10 a.m. to register your group for the treasure hunt or pick up the day’s timetable. Ferries and buses run between Mali Lošinj and Veli Lošinj every half hour; walking the coastal path takes about forty minutes.
Visitor Tips
- Bring a reusable water bottle and a sun hat; the harbor gets bright by midday.
- The institute’s small exhibition hall is air-conditioned – a pleasant break between outdoor events.
- If you want a dolphin-watching excursion, book early at the harbor kiosk; boats fill quickly on Dolphin Day.
A cheerful mix of science, fun, and island hospitality, Dolphin Day lets visitors of all ages celebrate Lošinj’s beloved marine mascots while supporting the people who safeguard them.
